Everything you need to know about maintaining a bouncy castle

Have you just purchased a bouncy castle or are you an experienced rental business owner? Proper maintenance is the key to ensuring a long lifespan and a safe play experience. In this guide, we share all the tips and tricks to keep your bouncy castle in perfect condition, from cleaning to repairing and storing it correctly. Read on to get the most out of your investment!

What are bouncy castles made of?

Most bouncy castles are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). This material is strong, flexible, and resistant to wear, making it ideal for intensive use.

At JB Inflatables, we go one step further. We manufacture our bouncy castles using high-quality, extra-reinforced PVC fabric with a strong polyester inner layer. This makes our inflatables even more durable and resistant to intensive use. Using professional, industrial sewing machines ensures that each bouncy castle is finished to perfection.

Additionally, we consciously choose UV-resistant PVC, ensuring that the colours of your bouncy castle remain vibrant for years, even with extensive exposure to sunlight. This means you can rely on a product that not only looks good but also lasts long, no matter how often it is used.

How long does a bouncy castle last?

With proper maintenance, a bouncy castle can last an average of 5 to 10 years. Of course, this depends on how often the bouncy castle is used and under what conditions. Intensive use at rental businesses or large events can shorten its lifespan. However, our experience shows that JB Inflatables bouncy castles often last over 10 years.

At JB Inflatables, we stand for quality, which is why we offer 2 years of warranty on all our bouncy castles. Most of our customers choose a new model after 5 to 10 years, not because the old castle is worn out, but to stay innovative. Additionally, a 5-year-old bouncy castle often retains good value on the second-hand market, making it easier to transition to a new model.

How do you dry a bouncy castle?

After a rain shower, it’s important to dry your bouncy castle thoroughly before storing it. A wet bouncy castle can cause mould and unpleasant odours. Follow these steps for the best results:

  • Remove excess water: Use a flexible squeegee or a towel to remove as much water as possible from the surface. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the PVC.
  • Use a clean, dry groundsheet: Place the bouncy castle on a large, clean groundsheet. This prevents it from becoming wet again from the ground.
  • Turn the bouncy castle over: Ensure you flip the bouncy castle so all sides dry properly. Seams and corners often retain moisture.
  • Use a leaf blower: For hard-to-reach areas such as seams, use a leaf blower on a low setting to avoid damaging the material. This significantly speeds up the drying process.
  • Let it dry in the sun: Fully inflate the bouncy castle and leave it in the sun for a few hours. The airflow helps remove the last bit of moisture.

By following these steps, you ensure that your bouncy castle stays dry and in perfect condition, ready for its next use!

How do you roll up a bouncy castle?

A well-rolled bouncy castle saves space and prevents damage. Follow these steps for the best results:

  1. Deflate it: Turn off the blower and open all air vents to let the air escape quickly.
  2. Fold it: Fold the bouncy castle neatly lengthwise towards the centre.
  3. Roll it up: Start rolling from one end while pressing firmly to remove any remaining air. Rolling towards a zip allows the air to escape until the last moment.
  4. Secure it: Use the provided straps or ropes to secure the rolled-up bouncy castle.
  5. Protect it: Lay the provided transport bag on the ground, roll the bouncy castle onto it, and tie it securely. This protects it during transport and prepares it for storage.

It is important to roll up the bouncy castle when it is dry to prevent mould during storage.

How do you clean a bouncy castle?

A clean bouncy castle is not only more attractive but also safer for users. Regular cleaning prevents mould, unpleasant odours, and wear, extending the lifespan of your bouncy castle. Here’s the best approach:

  1. Prepare a cleaning solution: Mix Rapid Cleaner with lukewarm water according to the instructions on the bottle. This cleaner is specifically developed for intensive use and helps remove stubborn dirt and grease stains without damaging the PVC fabric.
  2. Scrub thoroughly: Use a soft brush to clean the entire surface of the bouncy castle. Work in small sections and pay close attention to seams and corners where dirt often accumulates.
  3. Treat mould spots with HG mould remover: If you find mould spots, use HG mould remover. Spray it directly onto the stains, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe clean with a dry cloth. This product is ideal for removing mould and black stains caused by intensive use or storage.
  4. Rinse with clean water: Rinse the bouncy castle thoroughly with clean water to remove all cleaning residues. Leftover residue can damage the material over time.
  5. Dry with a clean cloth: Use a cloth to remove excess water and dry the surface. This prevents streaks and ensures the bouncy castle is ready for use immediately.

With these steps and the right cleaning products, your bouncy castle will stay in top condition.

How do you repair a bouncy castle?

Bouncy castles are designed to withstand heavy use, but small tears can occasionally occur from intensive use or sharp objects. Fortunately, most damage can be easily repaired with the right tools.

Step-by-step repair guide:

  1. Find the leak: Inflate the bouncy castle and listen or feel where air is escaping. Sometimes, a little soapy water on the surface can help; bubbles will form where the leak is located.
  2. Clean and dry the area: Clean the damaged area with water and a soft cloth. Ensure it is completely dry before starting the repair. This is essential for proper adhesive bonding.
  3. Use Tear-Aid repair material or a patch: For small tears or holes, Tear-Aid is an excellent choice. This flexible repair material adheres well to PVC and can be applied without glue. For larger holes, use a PVC patch from the repair kit.
  4. Apply the glue: Use Bison super glue or PVC repair glue to secure the patch firmly. Apply the glue evenly to the patch and press it firmly onto the leak. Be careful not to use too much glue, as this can damage the material.
  5. Allow the glue to dry: Give the glue time to cure properly. Ensure the bouncy castle is not inflated or used during this period
  6. Test the repair: Reinflate the bouncy castle and check for any remaining leaks. If everything is sealed, your bouncy castle is ready for use again!
